How to make the PERFECT Old Fashioned cocktail
Mar 13, 2025
The Old Fashioned is a timeless classic—a cocktail that has remained a staple in bars and home mixology for over a century. Its simplicity, elegance, and rich flavors make it the ultimate whiskey drink. Today, we’re sharing a recipe inspired by Ranger Station’s Old Fashioned candle, which perfectly captures the warmth and complexity of this legendary drink. So, grab your glass and let’s craft the perfect Old Fashioned.
Ingredients:
2 oz Rye whiskey
1 sugar cube
1 splash of water
3 dashes Angostura bitters
1 dash orange bitters
1 large ice cube
Lemon + orange peel for garnish
Instructions:
Step 1: Muddle the Sugar
Place a sugar cube at the bottom of your Ranger Station glass (or any sturdy, short glass). Add 3 dashes of Angostura bitters, 1 dash of orange bitters, and a splash of water. Use a muddler to break down the sugar and create a smooth base for your cocktail.
Step 2: Add the Whiskey
Pour in 2 ounces of rye whiskey. The spiciness of rye adds depth to the drink, making it the perfect choice for an Old Fashioned.
Step 3: Stir and Chill
Add a single large ice cube to the glass. Stir the cocktail for about 20–30 seconds until the mixture is well chilled and slightly diluted, allowing the flavors to meld beautifully.
Step 4: Garnish
Express the oils from a lemon and an orange peel over the drink by giving them a gentle twist over the glass. Rub the peels along the rim for extra aroma, then drop them into the drink as garnish.
Enjoy!
The result? A perfectly balanced Old Fashioned—bold, smooth, and subtly sweet with aromatic citrus and spice notes. Whether you're unwinding after a long day or setting the mood for an evening with friends, this classic cocktail never disappoints. Cheers!
